The Holden Commodore was designed to replace the full-size and less fuel efficient Holdens. The Commodore range included more modern trim and much better steering and handling.

Early models were released as Commodore, Commodore SL and Commodore SL/E trim levels. The Holden "red" 6 cylinder motor was carried over from the old full-size Holden but with more stringent pollution regulations, the VB would be the last Holden to use it.
